If you're not yet a GPS owner/user, now is a pretty good time to shop for one.  The Magellan Roadmate 1470 GPS is a good place to start your comparison shopping.  The Magellan folks have been in the GPS biz for about as long as there's been a GPS biz and their products get good reviews from previous buyers.  The Roadmate 1470 has a 4.7" "anti-glare" touch-screen and the package includes all you need to attach it to your car.  The rechargeable battery gives you up to 3 hours of "cord-free" use, but that isn't usually a concern when you're using the included car power adapter.

The 1470 comes with detailed maps of all 50 U.S. states as well as Canada and Puerto Rico.  The "text-to-speech" capability means the 1470 will try to pronounce all upcoming street and exit names (rather than generic "turn right here"-type notifications).  Position accuracy is in the 10-15 foot range.  You can bookmark "favorite" locations for easy future recall.

There are over 6 million (!) "points of interest" in the Magellan Roadmate 1470 database, making it very easy to find nearby gas stations, hotels, restaurants, ATMs and many other categories of places.  Magellan partners with AAA to include "TourBook" information for many of those places.
