December 17th

December 17, 1903 is best known as the day that the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, first demonstrated the possibility of powered flight.  After an extended series of glider flights in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina they finally built an engine that was both light enough and powerful enough to get Orville off the ground for a flight of about 120 feet.  By the end of the day they had stretched it out to 200 feet.
