December 19th

Yes, there was a time - not too long ago - when chess matches got news coverage.  On December 19, 1987 Gary Kasparov barely kept his world champion title when his return match against Anatoly Karpov ended in a 12-12 tie.  Kasparov gained the title in their previous match in 1985.  Karpov had been champ from 1975 to 1985.

And that's probably more than you've read about chess in your entire time on the web.

In more "books you've heard of, but never read" news - Emily Bronte, author of Wuthering Heights, died on this day in 1848, from tuberculosis at the age of 30.

Today's Birthdays

It's hard to believe that "Who's The Boss?"/"Charmed" babe Alyssa Milano (born 12/18/1972 in Brooklyn, New York) turns 37 years old today.

Blonde Russian goddess - and Playboy's Miss January 2001 - Irina Voronina (born 12/19/1977) celebrates her 32nd birthday today.

The original vampire-slaying Buffy, Kristy Swanson (born 12/19/1969 in Mission Viejo, California) his the big 40 today.
