On this date in 1803 the United States got a whole lot bigger as the deal to purchase 831,321 square miles from France was completed.  The Louisiana Purchase eventually became the states of Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska - plus pieces of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Louisiana.  Hey, we told you it was a big deal.  Not too bad for a little over $11 million.
