On this date in 1860 the world's first ironclad warship, appropriately named Warrior, was launched from the shipyard in Blackwall, England. At 9,210 tons the Warrior was built as a result of discovering during the Crimean War that ammunition had overtaken the materials used in wood shipbuilding.
